AVID
At Houston Middle School, we are committed to preparing every student for academic success and future opportunities. One way we do this is through the AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination).
What is AVID?
AVID is a nationally recognized program designed to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success. The program teaches students strategies for organization, note-taking, critical thinking, and collaboration—skills that will help them thrive in middle school, high school, college, and beyond.
What Students Gain from AVID:
Organizational Tools: AVID students use binders, planners, and focused note-taking to stay on track.
Academic Support: Tutorials, collaborative study groups, and teacher guidance help students strengthen understanding.
College & Career Readiness: Students learn about college pathways, explore career options, and develop leadership skills.
Growth Mindset & Determination: AVID emphasizes perseverance, self-advocacy, and setting high expectations.
Who Can Join?
AVID is open to students who are motivated to achieve and willing to challenge themselves. The program is especially valuable for students who may be the first in their family to attend college, who want additional support to reach their goals, or who simply want to strengthen their academic skills.
Why AVID Matters at Houston:
Through AVID, we equip students not only with academic tools but also with the confidence and determination to take ownership of their learning. Our goal is to create a college-going culture where every student can see themselves as successful, lifelong learners.
