Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad is a national science competition in the United States that encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
What It Is
Team-Based Competition: Students compete in teams (usually 15 members) rather than as individuals, which builds collaboration and leadership skills.
Events: There are over 20 different events each year that cover a wide range of STEM fields, such as biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, astronomy, engineering, and technology. Events can involve labs, written tests, or building challenges (for example, designing a bridge, a glider, or a robot).
Levels of Competition: Science Olympiad starts at the regional level, then advances to state and national tournaments. Schools compete against one another, earning medals in individual events and overall team trophies.
Why It’s Important
Hands-On STEM Learning: Students get to apply science concepts beyond the classroom, often working on real-world style problems.
College and Career Preparation: Many participants say Science Olympiad helped spark interest in STEM careers such as medicine, engineering, computer science, and research.
Teamwork and Leadership: Since events are team-oriented, students learn to rely on one another’s strengths.
